Personality: Despite how he's portrayed at the beginning of the story, Ryoga isn't a bad person. While his methods of fighting Ranma may have been overbearing at times, he's never shown to be evil; in fact most of the things he does are well intentioned be it for himself or someone close to him. In fact, the main reason he had wanted to fight Ranma at school was because he was being constantly humiliated and going hungry as a result of the other boy taking the last bread for himself. After their initial fight when he was introduced, he felt sorry about cutting Akane's long hair short, and allowed the fight to be postponed so that Akane could hit them both. That said, after his first few initial appearances, Ryoga has eased up and doesn't involve other people in the fights he has with Ranma anymore, as opposed to waking him up in the middle of the night to fight him.
Don't get him wrong, though. Ryoga still doesn't like Ranma, even if Ranma considers him kind of sort of his friend as well as the only person who he'd consider to be his rival. However, Ryoga's need to do good and keep things upright overpowers all animosity he has towards the pigtailed man. Once, he even saved him from being attacked by all of his enemies once his strength was depleted, saying that he hates it when people pick on the weak. That applies to him as well, as he cannot, in good faith, attack a person that he deems to be completely defenseless. Surprisingly enough, despite his rugged and wild appearance and his freakish strength, Ryoga fights with the most honor out of anyone in the series. When he even uses the mark of the gods, he declares that the humiliation of having the mark itself wasn't worth it, though he could defeat Ranma in any situation, even as a pig.
In comparison to the other male leads in the series, Ryoga does have the capabilities to love someone the most. Overly emotional and always thinking about the girl involved, he tries hard to love his love interests unconditionally. When he, Ryoga, and Mousse were in a hot spring together with Akane, Ukyo, and Shampoo on the other side, he was the only person who chose not to, and rather, went to go make sure that Mousse didn't make it over. When Akane walked in on the three soaking in hot water after returning during the Herb fight, Ryoga glanced away while Mousse scolded her and Ranma just watched her. In addition to that, Ryoga is incredibly shy, freezing when it comes to asking her on a date and being unable to figure out how to do it.
While he does come across as overly nice to Akane due to being in love with her, he also has the tendency to be a bit naive. He'll believe anyone who claims that Ranma has been doing something bad, or that someone has angered Akane in some way. He has a tendency to come off as a bit dimwitted in this respect-- especially when it comes to people, usually Ranma, wanting to trick him. Over the course of the story, Ranma dresses up in numerous transparent disguises and regardless of how obvious it is that something is off, Ryoga will buy into it. Even though he should know that he doesn't have a fiancee or a little sister, he'll believe that what the person is saying is completely true.
This doesn't help him physically or emotionally either. This causes him to buy into different objects granting him greater power that he needs to defeat Ranma or win Akane's love. Or, so he believes. So far, while some of the items do work, they have a tendency to backfire or not come into play at all. For example, the fishing pole of love worked, however, it worked to such an extent that the person that fell in love with Ryoga (which happened to be Ranma) was willing to be killed for his sake. The Shishi Hokodan worked, but used wrong the wrong way, and it would have left Ryoga emotionally hollow. These items and most of his fights are signs of him fighting with his heart, instead of his head.
All around though, Ryoga is a very emotional person. He grows elated to the point of crying when Akane shows affection towards him, and will grow hot-headed when Ranma does something that he or Akane doesn't like. Most of that emotion though, is sadness. Ryoga has a tendency to grow very depressed, in part due to his curses. Having a horrible sense of direction causes him to feel lonely as he spends months in the mountains on his own, and when he's with the one he loves, he only stays around as her pet P-chan. In addition, he always loses to Ranma and feels that it makes him less of a man to Akane-- causing him to feel even worse, and contribute to the usage of his Shishi Hokodan technique.
Over time, he became less revenge oriented and more goal oriented, as he wanted two things; to defeat Ranma and become a full man. Living his life as a half pig half human has been tumultuous for Ryoga to say the least. In one aspect of it, he's happy that he can be so close to Akane and snuggle up with her as her pet P-Chan. However, he then reminds himself that she only loves him as a pet, and would never come to love him as her pet AND a friend. Therefore, he feels that Akane will only come to love him if he's back to his original state. Things were made even more complicated with the introduction of Akari Unryu, who loves him unconditionally, curse and sense of direction in all. In the end he chose Akari, however he still holds a small place in his heart for Akane.

Abilities: Ryoga's martial arts are primarily self-taught. Through training on his own and spending most of his time in the wild with animals and fighting off others in the series such as Ranma and Mousse, he has learned martial arts as well as built up amazing upper body strength. He has been shown to throw large boulders and can crush metal poles in his arms, as well as wield a heavy iron umbrella with one hand.
He also two has different techniques that he uses, both for traveling and for fighting.
►Bakusai Tenketsu (or: Breaking Point)- The Breaking Point technique is a move that was originally intended for construction purposes, until Ryoga learned it. Utilizing points within them, he is able to use his index finger to shatter the ground or boulders. It can also be used to clear a path, however it's not as effective in a cave, since the shrapnel will just make it more difficult to cross. This was taught to him by Cologne, who bound his entire hand up except for his index finger and had him try it on a large boulder that was coming at him over and over again. Given all the times he failed, being hit by it increased his endurance, making him more resistant to impacts.
►Shishi Hokodan (or: Lion's Roar Blast)- Ryoga learned this while traveling through the mountains, needing to clear a path in order to continue. However, as the Bakusai Tenketsu didn't work, a passing construction worker handed him a scroll to teach him the Shishi Hokodan. Utilizing heavy ki within his body, he's able to use a powerful ki blast. It was soon revealed that the source of the heavy ki was depression, something that Ryoga had in bounds. He used this to defeat Ranma for the very first time, and soon found out the way to use it to it's fullest: pushing the heavy ki up, he's able to project it into the air once his depression reaches it's max, allowing it to crash down onto his opponent.
There's his one magical technique as well: he has the ability to turn into a small black piglet when he's splashed with cold water. This is the result of him falling into the Spring of Drowned Piglet in the Jusenkyo Ground of Cursed Springs. When splashed with warm water, he turns back into a man. This causes a lot of strife for him, and he wishes for the day he can return to the cursed springs and become a full man.
Other: It's not an ability, but it's probably the most important part of his character: Ryoga has a completely dreadful sense of direction. He's been seen spending four days traveling around Japan just to find a lot around the corner from his house, and given a really fast mode of transportation? China to Moscow, in no time at all, just trying to find a convenience store. He's even gotten lost in someone's house for a few hours. That's how bad it can be.

Third Person Sample:
Despite the odd nature of the school and the abnormal happenings surrounding it, Ryoga had every intention of at the very least, making his way to class. There were two reasons for this; the first was that there was always the hope that the classes weren't a total waste of time and they managed to contain a key or clue to escape. Any way he could assist the other trapped students in getting out of here as soon as possible was worth it to him.
The second, as selfish as it seemed, was to have time and a place to begin writing letters to the outside, if they were able to be delivered. There had to be some way to get into contact with anyone outside of the school, and he believed in his girlfriend, Akari Unryu, to come searching for him and to bring help with her. Plus, surrounded by others as he may be, he knew he would grow to miss her the most of everyone back in Nerima.
Oh, how he wished he could leave this place and return to his training. If he were stuck here for a long time, anything were liable to happen. Akari could move on and find another love, or that bastard Ranma could get married and become a full man, being able to mock him once he returned. The joke would be on him in that case; there was always the opportunity to become stronger if he were able to figure out the layout of the school and find his own space to train.
Today as he continued making his way through the corridors of the school, even he noticed that it was taking longer than usual. It usually took him around 25 minutes to find his way towards his classroom, but today it felt so long the he couldn't even parse the time anymore. Had it been ten minutes?
Twenty minutes?
Forty minutes?
It couldn't have been an hour, could it?
And yet the hallway seemed to go on and on, until finally he stopped walking. As loathsome as his sense of direction was, even he had to imagine it wasn't this bad. It was clear that whoever controlled this school was playing a joke on him, and it wasn't funny at all. Ryoga turned to face one of the school's walls, looking at his hand. It had been a few days and he hadn't tried in a while...
He clenched his fist, before extending his index finger and staring intently at the wall, right before shouting out:
"Bakusai Tenketsu!" He jabbed at the wall with his finger, keeping it in place for about twenty seconds. Truthfully, if there wasn't a section of the wall already broken away and collapsed instantly, then it didn't work. There was no record of there ever being a delayed effect, but he felt like removing his finger was an admission of defeat.
"Damn it... Damn it!" Pulling his finger back, Ryoga's hand balled back up into a fist, colliding with the wall. It was enough to leave a dent in the wall, but not enough to bring him any closer to escape. It was enough to almost leave him shaking... not from the pain, but from his own helplessness.
What brought him out of his stupor was the sound of giggling and gibberish, whipping his head around to see them walking straight forward, wrapped up in whatever they did with themselves, away from him. Even if they hadn't noticed him, Ryoga's face grew flushed, as he turned back towards the hallway.
"Trying to make a fool of me... it's unforgivable! I guarantee, I will find my way to class!"
After his proclamation to whoever was watching, he sighed and continued on his way... which happened to be in the opposite direction that he had been walking this entire time.
